A residence is the central axis where yin and yang energies meet, and the framework for human relationships. Only those with broad knowledge and clear insight can truly grasp this principle.

A house should not rely solely on yang energy; it needs yin for balance. Likewise, yin should not dominate alone—yang must be present. In residential design, the yang-oriented dwelling benefits from careful attention to its yin areas.

A site blessed with fortune should follow natural patterns. When beneficial energies align with a location, build there. Keep the space clean, spacious, and solid. Doing so brings peace, prosperity, and honor to the entire household.

A space that invites disaster should be made smaller and smaller, to reduce the chance of misfortune following you. A space that brings good fortune should be expanded again and again, so that your children and grandchildren may enjoy honor and happiness.

A house with five "emptinesses" brings poverty; with five "fullnesses," wealth. The five emptinesses: too few people in a large house; a big gate but small interior; broken walls; misplaced well and stove; large yard with few rooms. The five fullnesses: many people in a small house; large house with small gate; intact walls; many livestock in a compact home; water drains southeast.

A house that is too large for its inhabitants does not bring happiness. Build only half the space your household could fill, and you will surely enjoy a long life. [A dwelling should not be spacious.]

When arranging a house, the order of repairs matters. First fix areas associated with misfortune, then those linked to good fortune—this brings luck. Doing it in reverse, good fortune first and misfortune later, invites bad outcomes.

Houses for the living are mostly modified on the outside, while dwellings for the dead are mostly modified on the inside.

A residence takes its form and layout as the body, springs and streams as the blood vessels, the earth as skin and flesh, plants as hair, buildings as clothing, and doors and gates as the hat and belt. When all these elements are arranged harmoniously, the dwelling is elegant and auspicious.

When you repair or expand the side of a house that faces the direction you originally came from, it brings good fortune. But if you expand the opposite side, it brings bad luck. For example, if you entered the home from the east and later build westward, that is the wrong direction. Expanding eastward, toward your original path, is correct.

Avoid a layout called "Turtle Head Moon" where a structure points north toward the main hall from the south. This is considered an unlucky pavilion. Even a slightly taller building in that position brings misfortune. A saying warns: "Turtle Head in the south means the owner will change." It is also said to harm the householder.

If a house has a tall building or large tree to the southeast, it is considered unfavorable. Removing them brings good fortune.

When building or renovating a home, avoid the Four King Gods, also called the Emperor's Chariot, Path, and House. For example, in spring, the east belongs to the Green Emperor, ruler of wood. The Tiger month is the chariot, the Dragon month is the house. So in the first, second, and third months, do not build facing east.

A year has twelve months, each with positions of vital energy and dead energy. Building on a month's vital energy position brings good fortune, especially when it aligns with celestial patterns. But building on a dead energy position invites disaster.

The main gate, considered the "heavenly door" and the head of the home's yang energy, should be stable and solid, not excessively tall or imposing. Violating this brings harm to the household head, including severe head and neck illnesses.

The direction of Hai (north-northwest) is associated with the Vermilion Bird, the Dragon's Head, and the father's life seat. Building or sitting in violation of this position is believed to harm the life of the person seated there.

The character Ren brings great calamity. It relates to the mother's fate. Violating it harms the occupants, causing sudden disasters and arguments.

A text on residential spatial design warns: The position to the right of the main hall is associated with death and mourning. The eldest son's wife should not sit there. Doing so brings harm to the person seated, causing disorientation, eye injuries, floods, and disputes.

The direction of Gui represents punishment and legal disputes. It is associated with the fate of the second son's wife. If this position is violated, it brings harm to those seated there, leading to arguments, lawsuits, and other misfortunes.

The "ugly" direction corresponds to official prisons and the fate of younger daughters-in-law. Violating this position invites disasters involving ghosts, thieves, fires, and strange occurrences.
